Star Wars: Age of Rebellion – “Lando Calrissian”

Written by: Greg Pak
Art by: Matteo Buffagni
Published by: Marvel Comics

Chronology Placement: Set shortly before “The Empire Strikes Back

Set shortly before Han & Leia’s impromptu visit to Cloud City in “The Empire Strikes Back”, this one-shot issue focuses on Lando’s attempts to manage the resources at the Bespin mining facility, relying primarily on luck and raiding his secret savings. Deep in debt and forced to make some tough decisions to raise funds to maintain Cloud City, this story highlights Lando’s sense of honour as well his tendency to make bad choices. Greg Pak’s interpretation of Lando foreshadows his behaviour in “The Empire Strikes Back” and how he is frequently placed between a rock and a hard place. Pak also makes use of the camaraderie between Lando and Lobot – a relationship which was developed nicely in the “Lando” miniseries by Charles Soule. Pak references Lando’s inability to cure Lobot from his implants, and I hope this means that we will see this subplot followed up on in a future comic series.

Matteo Buffagni’s artwork is spectacular, capturing the charm and personality of Lando Calrissian which was effortlessly brought to life by Billy Dee Williams in the movies. Buffagni’s artwork is brought to life by the vibrant, eye-catching bright colours from Tamra Bonvillain – I particularly liked the subtle hues used to make the characters stand out, and the vivid colours used to accentuate the gas clouds that surround Bespin. The unconventional colour choices imbue the story with the same irrepressible charm and flamboyance of its lead character, and helps the issue stand out from the other one-shots in the Age of Rebellion series.

I’ve never been particularly invested in the fate of Bespin, but this surprisingly engaging story made me want to know more about the mining facility post-“The Empire Strikes Back”. Lando is a great character, and one who I’ve felt has always been under-utilised in the series, and this fantastic one-shot is a tantalizing tease at the potential to explore the character further in the future.

Score – ★★★ ½
